Air quality continues to be an important consideration in our everyday lives in 2026. We live in a world filled with traffic, vehicle emissions, and other sources of air pollution that can affect the air we breathe. But air pollution isn’t only an outdoor concern. PM2.5 can also be found indoors, with sources including cooking, smoke and other household activities.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), while PM2.5 levels had decreased until 2020, they have remained largely unchanged since, which is not good news.

This is particularly important when it comes to exercise. When we exercise, we breathe more rapidly and take in more air, which can also mean inhaling more air pollutants.

When outdoor air quality is poor, exercising indoors can be a good alternative to help reduce exposure to outdoor air pollutants. However, it’s also important to consider the quality of the air indoors where PM2.5 and other pollutants can still affect us.

Why Should I Care About Exercise And Air Quality?

Whether you’re exercising at home or outdoors, the quality of the air you breathe can affect your overall wellbeing. Poor air quality can make exercise less comfortable and may increase the number of pollutants reaching your respiratory system. There’s also the possibility that fine particles can travel deeper into your lungs because you’re breathing harder when you exercise.

In the short term, breathing in poor indoor air quality can cause symptoms like coughing, stinging or irritated eyes, a runny nose, wheezing, and more. Poor indoor air quality over time may lead to more serious breathing problems.

Tips For Working Out Safely Indoors

Ensure That Your House Is Properly Ventilated

One way the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends reducing indoor air pollutants is through proper ventilation. When the weather is nice and outdoor air quality is good, try letting fresh air in by opening windows or doors. This can help remove pollutants that may build up indoors, such as those produced when cooking. Kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans can also help improve ventilation by removing pollutants and excess moisture. So, remember to use them to help maintain good indoor air quality.

Stop Outdoor Pollutants From Coming In

PM2.5 is one of the pollutants that can affect air quality, and it can come from both indoor and outdoor sources. We cannot always control the air that enters our homes, but there are ways to reduce the number of outdoor pollutants that come inside. For example, you could keep windows closed when outdoor air quality is poor, such as during periods of high pollen or heavy traffic near busy roads.

Invest In HomePure Zayn

An air purifier is one of the best ways to help control and maintain good indoor air quality. Clean indoor air is important for our long-term wellbeing, especially as we spend a significant amount of time indoors. Thankfully, with a world-class, ECARF-certified air purifier like HomePure Zayn, we can help keep the air in our homes cleaner for our families.

Also, make sure to clean or replace the filter regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions, as the filter can become filled with dust and other pollutants over time. Keeping your air purifier and its filter well maintained can help create a cleaner and more comfortable home environment.

Take Care Of Your Indoor Workout Space

The exercise space with the good quality air environment.

Even if you decide to exercise indoors when outdoor air quality is poor, indoor air pollutants can still be present. So, it is a good idea to place your air purifier in your workout space before you exercise. Choosing the right spot in your home, away from common sources of indoor air pollution, can also help. If you are a regular gym-goer, try to work out during off-peak hours. This can help you avoid crowded spaces and reduce your exposure to indoor pollutants.

Staying healthy is something we should all pay attention to. Whether you’re exercising outdoors or working out at home, being aware of air quality can help you make better choices about when and where you exercise. Try these tips to improve the air quality around you and create a healthier environment for exercise.
